Nominated for a Grammy for the very first time in the band’s history for their album ‘Swirling’ on Strut in the Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album category. Recorded in Spring 2019 pre-pandemic and released in October 2020, the album was recorded at Rittenhouse Soundworks in Philadelphia and was the Arkestra’s first new studio recording to emerge in over 20 years, capturing them at the peak of their powers.
Philly has long been a jazz hub, with cool cats like John Coltrane, Lee Morgan, Jimmy Smith, and Benny Golson calling the city home. Such figures were mainstays in the clubs and concert halls that made up an integral part of the mid-20th century urban landscape. This tour will highlight key locations and stories from Philly’s heyday as a jazz mecca in the 1950s and 1960s up until the present.
Jazz on the Green is a showcase of local music culture, set within the lush green space of Fisher Park, in the heart of Olney. The event was launched in 2016 and grew into an annual tradition with an increasing audience, up until the pandemic in 2020. After a two year hiatus, we are bringing this beloved community event back. Olney Culture Lab is joined by Fisher Park Alliance and Gibson School of Music to produce this event. Confirmed featured performers so far are: Professor Randy J. Gibson & Double Portion, Malik Henry & NuERA, and Kendrah Butler Quartet.
Ruth Naomi Floyd is a vocalist, composer and educator. She leads her own multi-faceted ensemble and her discography consist primarily of original compositions. Served as Director of Jazz Studies at Cairn University, Langhorne, Pennsylvania and is an Artist in Residence at Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Ruth taught music for twenty years at The City School in Philadelphia. The Frederick Douglass Jazz Works is Ruth’s latest body of compositions for jazz septet, based on the speeches and writings of the great leading orator, abolitionist, writer, publisher, and statesman. This body of work won the Best Vocal Recital Award at the San Francisco Classical Voice Audience Choice Awards for 2020-2021.
Join the Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection and the Office of Community Affairs and Engagement for a day of celebration and remembrance. Festivities include a conversation with Bob Perkins and WRTI music host and producer J. Michael Harrison, live entertainment featuring the Renaissance Messengers, reflections by Dr. Molefi Kete Asante, and a special tribute by Robert Kenyatta to the legendary William “Cody” Anderson, pioneer and iconic leader in Black radio in Philadelphia for decades.
