Free Jazz Walking Tour with historian Jack McCarthy

FreeSouth Philadelphia was a hotbed of jazz in the early to mid-20th century, home to many important jazz musicians and countless clubs, theaters, and other venues where the music was played. In this 90-minute tour you will visit key sites and hear fascinating stories of South Philly jazz musicians and the places they played. The tour will begin at the site of the legendary Showboat club near Broad & Lombard Streets and end at Hawthorne Park at 12th and Catherine Streets, where after the tour you can enjoy a free jazz concert. Meet at 1409 Lombard Street—on Lombard, just west of Broad Street—under the blue historical marker honoring Billie Holiday.
Wear comfortable shoes and bring water with you. Rain date is Sept. 11th.
