Ars Nova presents Terri Lyne Carrington Celebrates Coltrane: Legacy of Love and Liberation // L’Rain

September 24 @ 6:30 pm

Please join Ars Nova Workshop in celebrating the life and legacy of John Coltrane on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth, with NEA Jazz Master Terri Lyne Carrington, and the multi-faceted L’Rain at the Mandell Theater on Thursday, September 24, 2026.

John Coltrane changed the course of music, but his story is also deeply rooted in Philadelphia. In 2026, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth, Ars Nova Workshop will present COLTRANE 100 — a citywide constellation of performances, conversations, exhibitions, listening events, community gatherings, educational programs, and neighborhood activations honoring Coltrane’s enduring legacy and Philadelphia’s central role in shaping it. Developed in collaboration with the John and Alice Coltrane estate, artists, scholars, community leaders, and cultural partners across the city, the initiative will unfold across venues, libraries, public spaces, and neighborhoods throughout Philadelphia.

Terri Lyne Carrington is an NEA Jazz Master, Doris Duke Artist, and four-time Grammy award-winning drummer, composer, producer, and educator. She serves as artistic director of the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice, as well for the Next Jazz Legacy apprenticeship program. For COLTRANE 100, Carrington will lead a performance of the spiritual-questing suite that has become revered as John Coltrane’s most iconic work, A Love Supreme.

Sharing the bill will be the multi-instrumentalist, composer, performer and curator L’Rain, whose sonic explorations interrogate how multiplicities of emotion and experience intersect with identity. Her latest record, fata morgana, is a genre-defiant synthesis of dancehall, tape meditations, slow jams, gospel, and crunched metal influences, and has received near-universal critical acclaim.
