SUMMARY:PCC Master Class Series featuring Bernard Purdie
DESCRIPTION:Drummer Bernard “Pretty” Purdie is a highly influential and innovative musician who\, to date\, has recorded on over 3000 albums. He has recorded in-studio for Steely Dan\, Isaac Hayes\, Donny Hathaway\, B.B. King\, Rolling Stones\, Aretha Franklyn\, and James Brown. Due to this massive recording output\, his drumming has naturally influenced beat-makers from Funk\, Soul\, Disco\, Rock’ n’ Roll\, Hip Hop\, and EDM. Purdie is known for his precise musical timekeeping and his signature use of triplets against a half-time backbeat: the Purdie Shuffle. You can famously hear Purdie’s drumming on Aretha Franklyn’s recording of Rock Steady\, in which she described “a funky and low-down beat” in the lyrics of the song. Recently\, Purdy was the featured drummer for the Broadway musical production of Hair and a Modern Drummer Hall of Fame inductee. \nThe Philadelphia Clef of Jazz & Performing Arts has received this very prestigious grant award. Just over 30 organizations in the Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey region were selected for bold thinking around increasing arts access and engagement and “Jazz Cultural Voices” was one. \n“Through PNC Arts Alive\, we continue to help invigorate local arts organizations while bringing new and exciting programs to our community\,” said Joe Meterchick\, PNC regional president for Philadelphia\, Delaware and Southern New Jersey. “The creativity and collaboration demonstrated by the local arts community is evident in the programs that will be introduced\, while enabling new visitors and residents alike to experience a diverse range of exhibits and performances.” \nFor more information on PNC Arts Alive and the grant recipients visit www.PNCARTSALIVE.com
