SUMMARY:PCC Master Class Series featuring Bernard Purdie
DESCRIPTION:Drummer Bernard “Pretty” Purdie is a highly influential and innovative musician who\, to date\, has recorded on over 3000 albums. He has recorded in-studio for Steely Dan\, Isaac Hayes\, Donny Hathaway\, B.B. King\, Rolling Stones\, Aretha Franklyn\, and James Brown. Due to this massive recording output\, his drumming has naturally influenced beat-makers from Funk\, Soul\, Disco\, Rock’ n’ Roll\, Hip Hop\, and EDM. Purdie is known for his precise musical timekeeping and his signature use of triplets against a half-time backbeat: the Purdie Shuffle. You can famously hear Purdie’s drumming on Aretha Franklyn’s recording of Rock Steady\, in which she described “a funky and low-down beat” in the lyrics of the song. Recently\, Purdy was the featured drummer for the Broadway musical production of Hair and a Modern Drummer Hall of Fame inductee. \nThe Philadelphia Clef of Jazz & Performing Arts has received this very prestigious grant award. Just over 30 organizations in the Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey region were selected for bold thinking around increasing arts access and engagement and “Jazz Cultural Voices” was one. \n“Through PNC Arts Alive\, we continue to help invigorate local arts organizations while bringing new and exciting programs to our community\,” said Joe Meterchick\, PNC regional president for Philadelphia\, Delaware and Southern New Jersey. “The creativity and collaboration demonstrated by the local arts community is evident in the programs that will be introduced\, while enabling new visitors and residents alike to experience a diverse range of exhibits and performances.” \nFor more information on PNC Arts Alive and the grant recipients visit www.PNCARTSALIVE.com

SUMMARY:Adult Education Series: History of Philadelphia Soul
DESCRIPTION:This three-session virtual course taught by Kit O’Toole\, traces the history of Philadelphia or “Philly” Soul. Class Schedule: Thursdays – Sept. 9\, Sept. 16 and Sept. 23 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nThis three-session virtual course taught by Kit O’Toole\, traces the history of Philadelphia or “Philly” Soul\, which greatly impacted not only the sound of 70s soul but the development of disco. Its lush string arrangements\, horns\, seductive vocals\, and varied lyrical content added an element of sophistication to funk and soul\, paving the way for disco and the 1990s neo-soul movement. \nThe class will begin with influences such as Phil Spector’s “wall of sound” production\, Motown’s pop/soul gloss\, and James Brown’s “on the one” funk. Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff\, the chief architects of the Philly Soul sound\, will be explored in depth\, as their compositions and productions resulted in classics by the O’Jays\, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes\, and Billy Paul. The duo would also form the Philadelphia International label\, whose legendary house band MFSB helped craft the sound. Along the way\, the sound helped create disco and influenced acts as diverse as David Bowie\, Hall and Oates\, and Jill Scott. In addition to multimedia presentations\, group discussions will further enhance understanding of this greatly influential genre. \nZoom Link will be provided upon registration.

SUMMARY:CD Release for the #1 chart topping 'Jawanza Kobie Jazz Composer' released earlier 2021
DESCRIPTION:CD Release for the #1 chart topping ‘Jawanza Kobie Jazz Composer’ released earlier 2021 \nJawanza Kobie would simply like to be known as a composer in the truest sense of the word. Ever since he was young boy he idolized the music of Beethoven\, George Gershwin\, Aaron Copeland and began learning to notate his compositions at nine years of age. Born and raised in West Philadelphia\, he started taking piano lessons in his neighborhood at age six after his mother discovered that he could replicate on his own what his older brother had been taught in his piano lessons right after his brother had finished practicing.

SUMMARY:FREE Labor Day Concert at Hawthorne Park by Philly Legend Odean Pope!
DESCRIPTION:Master maestro ODEAN POPE is a Philadelphia founding father of jazz saxophone\, a prolific composer\, arranger and treasured educator. Odean Pope’s music is consistently on the edge\, and he’s been described as a “tenor terror” by JazzTimes. A musician’s musician\, Odean has attracted some of the most exciting musical minds to collaborate with him over many years and many recordings. \nPlaying with Pope at Hawthorne Park will be pianist Tom Lawton\, bassist Lee Smith\, and drummer Craig McIver \n“Odean Pope is a bad\, bad\, bad musician\, man!” said saxman Joe Lovano after playing on “Locked and Loaded.” Ornette Coleman was moved to write the liner notes. Archie Shepp\, feeling similarly\, wrote extensive liner notes for “Odean’s List.” Odean was a member of the Max Roach Quartet for more than two decades and has performed and recorded with some of the world’s greatest jazz artists. Odean has devoted a musical lifetime toward developing his distinctive voice that remains boldly inventive and just plain gorgeous.
