SUMMARY:Immanuel Wilkins Quartet // Divine Offering presented by Ars Nova Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Please join Ars Nova Workshop in celebrating the life and legacy of John Coltrane on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth\, with acclaimed saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins and a celebration of the music of Alice Coltrane\, at the Mandell Theater on Saturday\, September 26\, 2026. \nJohn Coltrane changed the course of music\, but his story is also deeply rooted in Philadelphia. In 2026\, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth\, Ars Nova Workshop will present COLTRANE 100 — a citywide constellation of performances\, conversations\, exhibitions\, listening events\, community gatherings\, educational programs\, and neighborhood activations honoring Coltrane’s enduring legacy and Philadelphia’s central role in shaping it. Developed in collaboration with the John and Alice Coltrane estate\, artists\, scholars\, community leaders\, and cultural partners across the city\, the initiative will unfold across venues\, libraries\, public spaces\, and neighborhoods throughout Philadelphia. \nThis special double bill explores the wider universe of Coltrane’s legacy. Born in Philadelphia\, Immanuel Wilkins is a saxophonist\, composer\, and multidisciplinary artist working at the intersection of sound\, performance\, and visual composition. In addition to his musical practice\, Wilkins works with bronze sculptures\, large-scale megaphones\, public sculptural playgrounds\, and works on paper that examine the graphic score\, inspirations that echo Coltrane’s own voracious curiosities. Wilkins will be joined by a number of special guests to honor Trane’s centennial. In addition\, vocalist and composer Michelle Coltrane\, the daughter of John and Alice Coltrane\, will honor her mother’s devotional music with a program entitled Divine Offering: Celebrating the Legacy of Alice Turiyasangitananda with Sita Michelle Coltrane.

SUMMARY:Library Mixtape & Philadelphia Jazz Legacy Project present: John Coltrane at 100
DESCRIPTION:Library Mixtape is a club for folks to listen to and discuss vinyl records! Whether you are just starting to get into records or you’re an avid crate digger\, we welcome listeners of all b \nackgrounds. Library Mixtape meets last Wednesdays of the month from 5:30-7:30PM\, and there’s a different monthly theme. \nOur format is flexible: we have BYO vinyl\, guest co-host DJs\, librarian-led journeys through the library record collections\, and more! You are responsible for your own vinyl. Please sign up for our club email list to get meeting reminders\, information about music themes\, to sign up to bring an album using our sign up sheet\, or rescheduling/cancelation notices! \nListeners of all ages are invited to this session of club. A heads up that Coltrane struggled with substance dependencies\, and it may come up in conversation. Feel free to step out at any time if you need to! \nOur theme this month is John Coltrane at 100. John Coltrane would have turned 100 on September 23\, 2026. He passed away from liver cancer at only 41 years old on July 17\, 1967. In his too-short time earthside he was a pioneer in the free jazz movement\, and brought his deep spirituality to his later discography. \nJohn Coltrane used to visit Parkway Central Library and the Music Department in the late 1940s to early 1950s- he’d listen to Bartok and Stravinsky records at our listening stations. We recommend stopping by our Social Science and History Department before stopping by club- you can see a Stravinsky record we still have from that time period\, as well as other Coltrane materials on display! \nWe have a guest co-host this month: Suzanne Cloud (she/her) writer\, historian\, and jazz musician received her doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in American Studies in 2004. Cloud has published six YA history books\, contributed to the African American National Biography Project at Harvard\, co-authored with Diane Turner the book Images of America: Philadelphia Jazz\, edited The Real Philadelphia Book\, and was the founding director of Jazz Bridge\, a nonprofit aiding musicians in crisis. Currently\, Cloud is director of the Philadelphia Jazz Legacy \nProject\, an organization dedicated to building a Philadelphia area archive of jazz. Her play Last Call at the Downbeat was part of the 2013 Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts. Cloud is a past Commonwealth Speaker for the Pennsylvania Humanities Council\, a recipient of the Rutgers University Chancellor’s Award for Civic Engagement in 2015 and was named a Jazz Hero by the Jazz Journalists Association in 2019. \nWe’re so excited to spin vinyl with you! \nQuestions? You can contact the Music Department by email at erefmus@freelibrary.org or by phone at 215-686-5316.

The event will affirm jazz’s power to inspire reflection\, dignity\, and transformation across generations. SUMMARY:Tara Middleton & Jupiter Blue: Coltrane\, Spirit and the Spaceways
DESCRIPTION:The Philadelphia duo of vocalist and lyricist Tara Middleton and guitarist-composer DM Hotep takes John Coltrane’s compositions as departure points and reopens them through voice\, guitar\, and responsive electronics. Both are members of the Sun Ra Arkestra\, and they carry Coltrane’s example of disciplined listening\, spiritual searching\, and musical freedom into new territory. Spoken word and song braid together\, treating the voice the way Coltrane treated the horn. Short spoken introductions welcome every listener\, no prior jazz knowledge needed. This is Coltrane honored through discovery\, not imitation\, hosted by St. Laurentius Parish at Holy Name of Jesus. A free evening bringing the centennial into a Philadelphia neighborhood room. \nTara Middleton is a Philadelphia jazz vocalist\, violinist\, flutist\, composer\, lyricist\, and music educator\, and the first female lead vocalist of the Sun Ra Arkestra in over twenty years\, a role she has held since 2012. She is a two-time Grammy-nominated artist\, writing lyrics for Swirling\, the album that earned the Arkestra its first Grammy nomination. She co-founded Jupiter Blue Music Ltd. with her husband David Middleton. A Pennsylvania Council on the Arts master teaching artist\, she teaches across Philadelphia-area schools and carries her framework\, the voice as first instrument\, into classrooms and community spaces throughout the city. Her work moves between the stage\, the page\, and the classroom\, always rooted in the belief that the voice is the first instrument every person already owns\n \nThis project is an awardee of the Coltrane 100 Philly Community Project Grant.

SUMMARY:A Tribute to Coltrane: Tim Brey Quintet ft. Chris Coles and John Swana presented by Notsolatin
DESCRIPTION:The albums “My Favorite Things\,” “Coltrane Plays the Blues\,” and “Coltrane’s Sound\,” all recorded in October 1960\, signaled a major shift in Coltrane’s concept as a composer and improviser. Brey reinvents compositions from these seminal records\, and explores his own original music inspired by Coltrane and his journey. The ensemble will feature Brey on piano\, Chris Coles on the alto sax\, John Swana on the EVI\, Graham Kozak on bass\, and Wayne Smith Jr. on drums. \n \n“Philadelphia has been home to a long succession of celebrated jazz pianists\, creating a legacy that can be daunting for any young player following in their footsteps. But in the case of Tim Brey\, that expansive lineage functions strictly as creative motivation” —J. Michael Harrison\, WRTI \nTim Brey is a Philadelphia-based jazz pianist and composer. In his diverse career as a bandleader\, sideman\, and solo pianist\, Brey has performed with Terell Stafford\, Samara Joy\, Kurt Rosenwinkel\, Houston Person\, Renée Fleming\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Tim Warfield\, Peter Bernstein\, Warren Wolf\, Steve Wilson\, and many more. His third studio album as a leader\, “News\,” released in October 2022\, followed Brey’s expanding compositional vision for his quintet. \nBrey teaches jazz piano\, theory\, and improvisation at the Boyer College of Music at Temple University and the Wells School of Music at West Chester University. Outside of the university context\, he continues to maintain a small private studio of dedicated musicians and pianists. \n  \nThis project is an awardee of the Coltrane 100 Philly Community Project Grant.

SUMMARY:Jazz Philadelphia Summit 2026: Offering Edition presented in partnership with the Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection
DESCRIPTION:Sixty years after Coltrane recorded Offering in Mitten Hall\, we return to explore what it means to give and receive across generations. \n\n\n\n\nThe 2026 Jazz Philadelphia Summit takes Offering as an act of giving for its theme\, marking the 60th anniversary of Offering: Live at Temple University (recorded November 11\, 1966) and honoring it within the Coltrane 100 Philly centennial season. As the culminating event of the Coltrane 100 Philly centennial season and the lead event of a two-day celebration\, followed the next evening by a tribute concert featuring Ravi Coltrane at the Temple Performing Arts Center\, the Summit gathers Coltrane’s peers\, including musicians who performed on the original Offering recording\, for first-person reflections on what that night gave to Philadelphia’s jazz tradition. \nBut the Summit doesn’t stop at tribute. A keynote address and panel discussion turn “offering” from a historical act into a present-tense question: what does this community still have to give and receive from each other\, and what will each person in the room commit to offering going forward? Attendees leave not just having honored Coltrane’s legacy\, but having named their own role in carrying it. \nThe Summit will also feature a John Coltrane exhibition curated by the Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection\, drawing on the Collection’s archival holdings to place Offering within the fuller arc of Coltrane’s life and Philadelphia’s jazz history. Alongside the exhibition\, community partners will be on hand for resource-sharing\, connecting attendees with programs\, opportunities\, and support available across Philadelphia’s jazz ecosystem. \nCost: Pay-what-you-wish ($20 recommended donation)
