SUMMARY:Mysterious Traveler All Stars at Parkway Central Library
DESCRIPTION:The Office of Arts\, Culture and the Creative Economy invites you to celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month in Philadelphia this April with free Neighborhood Jazz Performances. \nThe Mysterious Traveler All Stars are an ensemble of some of the best composers and performers culled from the six year old\, Mysterious Traveler Concert Series\, presented as a collaboration between the Free Library of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Jazz Project. The series \,which presented monthly concerts from September through May\, showcased young and not so young\, Philadelphia Jazz artists. The name of the series emphasized the need for these highly talented artists and the general public to get acquainted\, making these strangers no longer mysterious\, but friends and fans. Most important\, these concerts were free to the general public. You didn’t have to be a hipster or a Jazz expert to attend. You just had to show up and enjoy yourself. \nThis event is presented as part of Philly Celebrates Jazz in partnership with Philadelphia Jazz Project.

SUMMARY:Jazz Bridge welcomes violinist Ben Sutin in a celebration of John Blake\, Jr
DESCRIPTION:Violinist Ben Sutin celebrates the 75th Birthday of John Blake\, Jr.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nJazz Bridge President and vocalist\, Rhenda Fearrington proudly hosts “Jazz @ Fellowship Hall” Third Wednesdays Concert Series at Ridge Avenue Methodist Church\, 7811 Ridge Avenue\, Phila.\, PA 19128. \nPlease join us on April 20\, 2022 as we welcome violinist Ben Sutin in a celebration of the late John Blake Jr.\, 75th birthday to Fellowship Hall. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. \nTickets: $15 online in advance at Eventbrite or at the door. Students admission is $5 with ID and children under 12 years old get in for free! But you must register at Eventbrite. \nMASKS ARE REQUIRED. PROOF OF VACCINATION IS REQUIRED. \nThis venue has limited seating capacity\, so buy your ticket in advance and early to avoid a sell-out. \n“Motivated by a diverse musical palate and burning passion to connect with people of all creeds through his music\, Benjamin Sutin has been residing in New York City for just under ten years where he has made a mark as an eclectic\, diverse and sought-after violinist\, violist\, pianist and composer in a host of musical genres including jazz\, Latin jazz\, rock and klezmer\, all of which has inspired his own original music.” \nAfter being enamored by the vocal qualities of the violin\, Benjamin began studying Suzuki violin at age five\, adding piano just a few years later. His career began to blossom when he started showing an interest in jazz\, just months before his 13th birthday. \nIt all started with a summer long workshop with saxophonist\, Odean Pope at the famed Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz in Philadelphia\, the only education institution at the time willing to accept a violinist into their program. Soon after\, Benjamin started studying privately with legendary jazz violinist John Blake Jr. among other Philadelphia based jazz luminaries on faculty at the Clef Club. \nSutin has since had the privilege of performing in venues such as: Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium\, The Kennedy Center\, The Apollo Theater\, NJPAC\, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola\, Lincoln Center’s Appel Room\, Smoke Jazz Club\, Microsoft Theater (Staples Center)\, the Nassau Coliseum\, Oracle Center\, Clifford Brown Jazz Festival\, Ravinia Festival\, Saratoga Performing Arts Center\, among many more. \nSutin joined Bobby Sanabria’s Multiverse Big Band in 2017 for the recording of their now Grammy Nominated and Jazz Journalist Association’s “Record of The Year” album\, West Side Story Reimagined. He is now a regular member of the group\, as well a frequent on-call sub for multiple salsa bands throughout NYC. \nSutin graduated from Manhattan School of Music in 2015 with a BM in Jazz Violin Performance. \nJohn Blake\, Jr. was one of the world’s leading jazz violinists for over four decades. Classically trained\, Blake first gained recognition on early-’70s recordings he made with Archie Shepp and in the mid-70s became established with a global audience during three years recording and touring as a member of Grover Washington\, Jr.’s popular “crossover” jazz band. \nHe then spent five years working extensively as a member of various ensembles led by pianist McCoy Tyner. Among other artists with whom Blake has performed and/or recorded with were the Duke Ellington Orchestra\, Turtle Island String Quartet\, Quartet Indigo\, the Steve Turre Sextet\, the Billy Taylor Trio\, Avery Sharpe\, Cecil McBee\, Jay Hoggard and James Newton. \nHe released his sixth album\, Quest that reunited him with Grover Washington and featured Joe Ford\, Charles Fambrough\, Ben Riley\, Omar Hill\, Joey Calderazzo\, on Sunnyside Records 1992. \nJazz Bridge\, an award-winning nonprofit dedicated to assisting Greater Philadelphia Metro area jazz and blues musicians and vocalists in times of crisis\, sponsors these neighborhood concerts throughout the region to keep the sound of Philadelphia alive. \nFor more info call: 215-280-2254\, 215-517-8337 or visit online at jazzbridge.org/events/neighborhood-concerts.

He also studied and performed with the Tuskegee City Dance Theater Company under the direction of Dyann Robinson. Joe has enjoyed performing with musical talents like the late Sam Reed\, Kenney Gates\, Thanny Nixon\, Tim Hutson\, Randy Gibson\, Adam Faulk\, Webb Thomas\, Immanuel Wilkins\, Yesseh Ali\, Nasir Dickerson\, Cornell Rochester (formerly of Joe Zawinul Syndicate)\, in the region’s most notable venues including Philly’s Platinum Grille\, The Kimmel Center\, Keswick Theater\, Merriam Theater\, and the Pennsylvania Convention Center. \nIn addition to Joe’s work as a musician\, he has produced Art Sanctuary’s Annual John Coltrane Jazz Festival\, one of Philadelphia’s largest outdoor jazz festivals drawing more than 2\,000 persons. And Harrison and his team produced long-standing series at smaller neighborhood venues including the Gospel Meets Jazz series at Philly’s Platinum Grille and Canaan Baptist Church and other venues. \nAlthough Harrison has brought world-class artists such as saxophone legend Kenny Garrett to Philadelphia stages\, his focus is to provide opportunities for young artists to perform and in turn for audiences to be inspired by their gifts and talents. Harrison’s commitment to young people does not end with music. He works diligently with the men’s mentoring effort at Canaan and has provided programming support for the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts.

SUMMARY:Jazz Bridge welcomes pianist Mike Bond and his group to Collingswood
DESCRIPTION:Jazz Bridge welcomes pianist Mike Bond and his group to Collingswood\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nJazz Bridge Vice Present Kevin Johnson proudly hosts “Jazz in the Wood\,” First Thursdays Neighborhood Concerts at the Collingswood Community Center\, 30 Collings Ave\, Collingswood\, NJ 08108. \nPlease join us on March 3\, 2022 as we welcome pianist Mike Bond to Collingswood. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. \nTickets: $15 online in advance at Eventbrite or at the door. Students admission is $5 with ID and children under 12 years old get in for free! But you must register at Eventbrite. MASKS ARE REQUIRED. PROOF OF VACCINATION IS REQUIRED. \nOne of the most striking qualities of Mike Bond’s superb debut recording\, The Honorable Ones\, is the understated\, sophisticated way in which the 30-year-old pianist-composer subsumes his abundant technique for imperatives of beauty and self-expression. His sophisticated\, restrained\, nuanced jazz aesthetics — grounded in exhaustive study of antecedent master practitioners of his instrument and animated by his devotion to the freedom principle — spring directly from his personal history. \nThe son of a Caucasian physics professor and a first-generation Chinese-American stay-at-home-mom whose parents migrated to the U.S. after the Cultural Revolution\, Bond started playing piano at age 4. Two years later\, he won his first classical piano competition at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall\, launching a long period during which he participated in contests at which he and his peers played repertoire by Beethoven\, Bach\, Mendelssohn\, and Haydn. Burned out by the pressure of performing\, he withdrew from that world at 11. \nHis jazz education began soon thereafter\, as a saxophonist in middle school and high school jazz band near Princeton\, N.J.\, where his parents had moved from Old Bridge\, N.J.\, where he spent his first ten years. “I played saxophone\, clarinet and sang in various ensembles — the orchestra\, the studio jazz band\, wind ensemble\, concert choir and marching band\,” Bond says. “But when I was 14\, my freshman year of high school\, the band director needed a jazz piano player for his ensemble\, and I was struggling with the chord changes.” \nTo rectify the issue\, Bond was sent to study with pianist Jim Ridl (best known for his long association with Pat Martino)\, who lived in a neighboring town. “I was mesmerized by Jim’s playing\,” Bond says. “I wondered how he could just improvise. He introduced me to my first jazz records. Jim gave me the basic tools — the forms\, the basic tools of improvisation\, the building blocks.” \nAfter high school\, Bond matriculated at Rutgers University\, where he studied with Stanley Cowell. “Stanley taught me to embrace music as ‘a mirror of the mind\, and the piano as an extension of myself.” “He helped me see the piano as the whole orchestra and shared with me his innovative methods for approaching counterpoint and harmony” he says. \n“I also would go to New York to study with Mike LeDonne\, because I wanted to actually learn how to play in the be-bop and hard-bop styles. As a sophomore\, I realized I wasn’t swinging and I had to figure out how. Then I realized that I had to check out the history; I couldn’t understand what Herbie Hancock does until I understood what Red Garland and Wynton Kelly were doing. With Mike\, I really studied\, the older cats and the newer cats who embodied the bebop and hard-bop language; those who created it and those who wielded it at the highest level: Bud Powell\, Hank Jones’\, Barry Harris\, Ahmad Jamal\, Kenny Barron and Mulgrew Miller. They embody to me what it means to play this music at the highest level.” \nJazz Bridge\, an award-winning nonprofit dedicated to assisting Greater Philadelphia Metro area jazz and blues musicians and vocalists in times of crisis\, sponsors these neighborhood concerts throughout the region to keep the sound of Philadelphia alive. \nFor more info call: 215-280-2254\, 215-517-8337 or visit online at jazzbridge.org/events/neighborhood-concerts
