DESCRIPTION:Presented by Scribe Video Center\, North Philadelphia History Festival (NPHF): The John Coltrane Edition is a multi-site celebration of Black and Puerto Rican cultural history in North Philadelphia. \nAnula Shetty and Michael Kuetemeyer of Termite TV are working in collaboration with Iris Brown of the Norris Square Neighborhood Project to install a series of augmented reality artworks at Las Parcelas Garden. Co-created with local residents\, these stories explore Bomba and Plena\, two deeply spiritual Afro-Puerto Rican musical traditions born from the need to honor ancestors\, survive hardship\, and resist colonialism. This installation is part of “Places of Power: Las Parcelas\,” a community-based\, immersive AR/VR project by Termite TV.

DESCRIPTION:Please join Ars Nova Workshop in celebrating the life and legacy of John Coltrane on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth\, with acclaimed saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins and a celebration of the music of Alice Coltrane\, at the Mandell Theater on Saturday\, September 26\, 2026. \nJohn Coltrane changed the course of music\, but his story is also deeply rooted in Philadelphia. In 2026\, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth\, Ars Nova Workshop will present COLTRANE 100 — a citywide constellation of performances\, conversations\, exhibitions\, listening events\, community gatherings\, educational programs\, and neighborhood activations honoring Coltrane’s enduring legacy and Philadelphia’s central role in shaping it. Developed in collaboration with the John and Alice Coltrane estate\, artists\, scholars\, community leaders\, and cultural partners across the city\, the initiative will unfold across venues\, libraries\, public spaces\, and neighborhoods throughout Philadelphia. \nThis special double bill explores the wider universe of Coltrane’s legacy. Born in Philadelphia\, Immanuel Wilkins is a saxophonist\, composer\, and multidisciplinary artist working at the intersection of sound\, performance\, and visual composition. In addition to his musical practice\, Wilkins works with bronze sculptures\, large-scale megaphones\, public sculptural playgrounds\, and works on paper that examine the graphic score\, inspirations that echo Coltrane’s own voracious curiosities. Wilkins will be joined by a number of special guests to honor Trane’s centennial. In addition\, vocalist and composer Michelle Coltrane\, the daughter of John and Alice Coltrane\, will honor her mother’s devotional music with a program entitled Divine Offering: Celebrating the Legacy of Alice Turiyasangitananda with Sita Michelle Coltrane.

DESCRIPTION:Please join Ars Nova Workshop in celebrating the life and legacy of John Coltrane on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth. A week of performances culminates with the duo of Marilyn Crispell and Tyshawn Sorey at the Mandell Theater on Sunday\, September 27\, 2026. \nMarilyn Crispell has become one of the most original and sought-after avant-garde jazz pianists and composers since emerging on the scene in the late 1970s. The adventurous and distinctive Crispell has performed and recorded extensively with well-known players on the jazz scene\, as well as performing and recording music by contemporary composers such as Robert Cogan\, Pozzi Escot\, John Cage\, Pauline Oliveros\, and Manfred Niehaus\, and played in the NYC Opera’s production of Anthony Davis’ opera X in 1986. Crispell has received awards and accolades including several fellowship grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts\, a composition commission from the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust\, and a Guggenheim Fellowship for music composition. \nFor this thrilling performance\, she’ll be joined by the Pulitzer Prize-winning drummer and composer Tyshawn Sorey. Sorey is celebrated for his extraordinary ability to blend composition and improvisation in his work\, while also offering incomparable virtuosity and effortless mastery of highly complex scores. He has performed globally with his own ensembles\, as well as alongside industry titans including John Zorn\, Bill Frisell\, Joe Lovano\, Vijay Iyer\, Jason Moran\, King Britt\, Claire Chase\, and Steve Lehman\, among many others.

Whether you are just starting to get into records or you’re an avid crate digger\, we welcome listeners of all b \nackgrounds. Library Mixtape meets last Wednesdays of the month from 5:30-7:30PM\, and there’s a different monthly theme. \nOur format is flexible: we have BYO vinyl\, guest co-host DJs\, librarian-led journeys through the library record collections\, and more! You are responsible for your own vinyl. A heads up that Coltrane struggled with substance dependencies\, and it may come up in conversation. Feel free to step out at any time if you need to! \nOur theme this month is John Coltrane at 100. John Coltrane would have turned 100 on September 23\, 2026. He passed away from liver cancer at only 41 years old on July 17\, 1967. In his too-short time earthside he was a pioneer in the free jazz movement\, and brought his deep spirituality to his later discography. \nJohn Coltrane used to visit Parkway Central Library and the Music Department in the late 1940s to early 1950s- he’d listen to Bartok and Stravinsky records at our listening stations. We recommend stopping by our Social Science and History Department before stopping by club- you can see a Stravinsky record we still have from that time period\, as well as other Coltrane materials on display! \nWe have a guest co-host this month: Suzanne Cloud (she/her) writer\, historian\, and jazz musician received her doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in American Studies in 2004. Cloud has published six YA history books\, contributed to the African American National Biography Project at Harvard\, co-authored with Diane Turner the book Images of America: Philadelphia Jazz\, edited The Real Philadelphia Book\, and was the founding director of Jazz Bridge\, a nonprofit aiding musicians in crisis. Currently\, Cloud is director of the Philadelphia Jazz Legacy \nProject\, an organization dedicated to building a Philadelphia area archive of jazz. Her play Last Call at the Downbeat was part of the 2013 Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts. Cloud is a past Commonwealth Speaker for the Pennsylvania Humanities Council\, a recipient of the Rutgers University Chancellor’s Award for Civic Engagement in 2015 and was named a Jazz Hero by the Jazz Journalists Association in 2019. \nWe’re so excited to spin vinyl with you! \nQuestions? His musical style is heavily influenced by Jazz\, Soul\, R&B\, Gospel\, Latin Jazz and Classical. ​ He  has toured and recorded with artists such as Seal\, Roy Ayers\, Curtis Fuller\, Nicholas Payton\, Dave Valentin\, Billy Paul\, Bobby Watson\, Slide Hampton\, Fred Wesley\, Musiq Soulchild\, Bilal\, Carol Riddick and many others. \nMIC’d Up (Music Industry Classrooms) is an artistic\, community-based initiative that connects all-star Philly DJs\, producers and musicians with the next generation of talent. MIC’d Up is a new platform for mentors and mentees to discuss their passions for art\, music and technology\, as well as to learn more about the business\, marketing and promotion of music.
