This truly “American” art form is an integral part of our history. Through improvisation\, syncopated rhythms\, an extended harmonic language\, and distinct use of instrumental sounds\, jazz creates a musical world that evokes deep passion\, emotion\, and excitement. \nIn recent years\, jazz has been overlooked in the drag/burlesque world. So\, we decided to curate a show paying homage to this incredible and varied art form. SUMMARY:Exploring the Philly Jazz Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Philly has long been a jazz hub\, with cool cats like John Coltrane\, Lee Morgan\, Jimmy Smith\, and Benny Golson calling the city home. Such figures were mainstays in the clubs and concert halls that made up an integral part of the mid-20th century urban landscape. This tour will highlight key locations and stories from Philly’s heyday as a jazz mecca in the 1950s and 1960s up until the present. We’ll begin near the site of the famed Earle Theatre at 11th and Market Streets. From there\, we’ll head down South Broad Street\, a major club thoroughfare. The tour will end at Broad and Fitzwater Streets. Put some pep in your step and come join the fun! \nTour leader Jack McCarthy is a longtime Philadelphia archivist and historian who specializes in Philadelphia music history. Jack has a master’s degree in music history and regularly lectures\, writes\, and gives walking tours on the subject. He has directed several Philadelphia music history projects\, including major projects for the Philadelphia Orchestra\, Historical Society of Pennsylvania\, and Mann Music Center\, and directed the 2018-2019 project Documenting & Exploring the Philly Jazz Legacy\, funded by the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. DESCRIPTION:The Sun Ra Arkestra\, under the longtime leadership of founding saxophonist Marshall Allen\, is as vital and cheekily unpredictable as ever. Blending jazz and blues with electronic and extraterrestrial influences\, these true pioneers of Afrofuturism carry on the inimitable vision and spirit of their enigmatic founder—composer\, pianist\, bandleader\, poet\, and cosmic philosopher Sun Ra.  \nNominated for a Grammy for the very first time in the band’s history for their album ‘Swirling’ on Strut in the Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album category. Recorded in Spring 2019 pre-pandemic and released in October 2020\, the album was recorded at Rittenhouse Soundworks in Philadelphia and was the Arkestra’s first new studio recording to emerge in over 20 years\, capturing them at the peak of their powers.

His career began to blossom when he started showing an interest in jazz\, just months before his 13th birthday. \nIt all started with a summer long workshop with saxophonist\, Odean Pope at the famed Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz in Philadelphia\, the only education institution at the time willing to accept a violinist into their program. Soon after\, Benjamin started studying privately with legendary jazz violinist John Blake Jr. among other Philadelphia based jazz luminaries on faculty at the Clef Club. \nSutin has since had the privilege of performing in venues such as: Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium\, The Kennedy Center\, The Apollo Theater\, NJPAC\, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola\, Lincoln Center’s Appel Room\, Smoke Jazz Club\, Microsoft Theater (Staples Center)\, the Nassau Coliseum\, Oracle Center\, Clifford Brown Jazz Festival\, Ravinia Festival\, Saratoga Performing Arts Center\, among many more. \nSutin joined Bobby Sanabria’s Multiverse Big Band in 2017 for the recording of their now Grammy Nominated and Jazz Journalist Association’s “Record of The Year” album\, West Side Story Reimagined. He is now a regular member of the group\, as well a frequent on-call sub for multiple salsa bands throughout NYC. \nSutin graduated from Manhattan School of Music in 2015 with a BM in Jazz Violin Performance. \nJohn Blake\, Jr. was one of the world’s leading jazz violinists for over four decades. Classically trained\, Blake first gained recognition on early-’70s recordings he made with Archie Shepp and in the mid-70s became established with a global audience during three years recording and touring as a member of Grover Washington\, Jr.’s popular “crossover” jazz band. \nHe then spent five years working extensively as a member of various ensembles led by pianist McCoy Tyner. DESCRIPTION:Teaching artists from Artístas y Músicos Latino Americanos (AMLA) will present an evening of music that celebrates the cultural connection between jazz Latin American music. The group of celebrated artists will perform a series of Latin Jazz pieces as well as some jazz standards with a Latin twist. The presentation will include a Q&A section designed to educate and empower the with music and information.  \nThe event is a Jazz Appreciation Month concert in partnership with The Office of Arts\, Culture and the Creative Economy and curated by AMLA’s Artistic Director\, Suzzette Ortiz. It will feature Luis Gonzalez on bass\, Mariano Medina on percussion\, Stephen Lorek on guitar\, Daniel de Jesús on Violin and Cello\, and Richard Tucker. \nAMLA’s Teachers/Artists performing: \nLuis Gonzalez on bass– Luis is a former AMLA student renowned in our Philadelphia community\, especially playing Christian salsa music. He has performed with Philly salsa legends like Wanda Rivera\, Foto Rodriguez and Orquesta La Unica\, and Jimmy Negron’s Zarza Ardiente. \nMariano Medina on percussion– Mariano is a vibrant percussionist versatile in many styles. He studied with renowned percussionist Pablo Batista. Mariano continues to be very active in the Latin music scene and plays along with many bands in the Mid-Atlantic Region. He currently plays with salsa artist Grammy-nominated Frankie Negron\, Grammy winner Willy Torres and a new upcoming group based out of New York FUNK SALSA URBAN. He is presently a Latin percussion teacher at AMLA music school. \nStephen Lorek on guitar– a singer-songwriter and an artist of rare form\, cutting his teeth with Modern Rock with his national touring band Shark tape and swooning audiences with his folk-influenced melodies deep lyrics. Lorek has been featured on WXPN\, performed with Phil Lesh\, and won the John Lennon songwriter contest. Based in Philadelphia\, he is a performer\, teaching artist\, and co-owner of the Doff and Tulip recording studio. \nRichard Tucker– Richard Tucker is a pillar of the AMLA family. He is an accomplished Jazz and bass player and an outstanding music engineer. Richard studied Mechanical Engineering at Temple University. He is very active in the Philadelphia scene performing in venues like Relish\, Warm Daddy’s\, and the like. He has been an AMLA teacher for more than 25 years. \nDaniel de Jesús on Violin and Cello -Daniel de Jesús is a painter\, composer\, and songwriter versed in the worlds of visual & sonic tapestries. De Jesús finds inspiration from historical figures like mystics\, scholars\, artists\, and martyrs; all of these are their muses. Daniel de Jesús has ten studio recordings of their music and performs with interdisciplinary artists and rock bands in the region and worldwide. He is currently the driving force of AMLA music school\, serving as the Music Education and Community Outreach Director. \nSuzzette Ortiz on piano – is a gifted pianist\, singer\, arranger\, composer\, and choral conductor. She is a graduate of Temple University\, Philadelphia\, and the Conservatory of Music in P.R. She has received multiple nationally and internationally awards as a choir conductor. She currently serves as Artistic Director of AMLA. Ortiz has been a luminary in Philadelphia’s Latin Music scene for the better part of three decades. She performed with the female Latin-jazz group ELLAS founded at AMLA\, and garnered four Latin Grammy nominations with Philadelphia salsa group Orquesta La Paz. Jazz Bridge Philadelphia Real Book\, J.W. Pepper\, and Hall Leonard have published some of her compositions.

His Spirit in Jazz Project brings together some of the finest musicians in Philadelphia who delight audiences with spiritually-grounded jazz performances. Joe’s approach to his work is Pan-African\, and therefore his performances are supported by African\, African-American\, Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian rhythms. The objective of the Joey Harrison Group is to promote spiritually grounded music in a variety of settings. He strives to provide the listener with high caliber music that feeds the soul. \nHarrison currently serves as the percussion at Canaan Baptist Church. Joe also was a member of God’s Community Choir under the leadership of the distinguished Cora Wells. Harrison has been influenced by the region’s best musicians\, having studied percussion with the late Doc Gibbs\, Orlando Fior\, Omar Hill\, Jan Jeffries\, Charles Walker and Juan “Cuco” Castellanos. He also studied and performed with the Tuskegee City Dance Theater Company under the direction of Dyann Robinson. Joe has enjoyed performing with musical talents like the late Sam Reed\, Kenney Gates\, Thanny Nixon\, Tim Hutson\, Randy Gibson\, Adam Faulk\, Webb Thomas\, Immanuel Wilkins\, Yesseh Ali\, Nasir Dickerson\, Cornell Rochester (formerly of Joe Zawinul Syndicate)\, in the region’s most notable venues including Philly’s Platinum Grille\, The Kimmel Center\, Keswick Theater\, Merriam Theater\, and the Pennsylvania Convention Center. \nIn addition to Joe’s work as a musician\, he has produced Art Sanctuary’s Annual John Coltrane Jazz Festival\, one of Philadelphia’s largest outdoor jazz festivals drawing more than 2\,000 persons. And Harrison and his team produced long-standing series at smaller neighborhood venues including the Gospel Meets Jazz series at Philly’s Platinum Grille and Canaan Baptist Church and other venues. \nAlthough Harrison has brought world-class artists such as saxophone legend Kenny Garrett to Philadelphia stages\, his focus is to provide opportunities for young artists to perform and in turn for audiences to be inspired by their gifts and talents. Harrison’s commitment to young people does not end with music. DESCRIPTION:The creator of the “Netta Bop” sound\, Arnetta Johnson introduces both young musical audiences and jazz aficionados to an all-new musical experience. Deemed one of the “20 Artists to Watch” by NPR\, Arnetta Johnson is leaving her stamp on the jazz world and earning her place in the playlists of her colleagues and peers. \nThe bandleader of her group\, Arnetta Johnson and SUNNY (Sounds Uplifting Nobility through Notes and Youth)\, and trumpeter for the indie-pop band AJR\, she strives to stand jazz on its head and inspire others. She has performed with some of music’s biggest artists and graced some of the world’s largest stages\, including performing with Beyonce’ at the Super Bowl. Listed as a featured trumpeter on the 2018 “OTR II Tour”\, and adding her signature sound on The Carters Everything Is Love 2018 Grammy Award-winning album.  Her numerous live performance credits include playing with the likes of Terri Lyme Carrington\, Christian McBride\, Ralph Peterson\, Geri Allen\, and Esperanza Spalding just to name a few. \nA New Jersey native\, Johnson attended the Creative and Performing Arts High School in Camden\, New Jersey and has received national medals from the NAACP ACT-SO competition\, has won over 20 Best Soloist Awards from various high school jazz festivals\, and was recognized as the Best Overall Soloist at the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Fest.
