SUMMARY:Sun Ra Arkestra Performs the Music of John Coltrane presented by Ars Nova Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Please join Ars Nova Workshop in celebrating the life and legacy of John Coltrane on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth. A week of performances kicks off with the Sun Ra Arkestra performing bold new arrangements of the legendary saxophonist’s music at the Mandell Theater on Wednesday\, September 23. \nJohn Coltrane changed the course of music\, but his story is also deeply rooted in Philadelphia. In 2026\, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth\, Ars Nova Workshop will present COLTRANE 100 — a citywide constellation of performances\, conversations\, exhibitions\, listening events\, community gatherings\, educational programs\, and neighborhood activations honoring Coltrane’s enduring legacy and Philadelphia’s central role in shaping it. Formed in the mid-1950s by its cosmic-philosopher namesake and led for more than three decades by the 102-year-old Marshall Allen\, the Sun Ra Arkestra combines era-spanning jazz with dance\, theatrics and an interstellar vision that helped lay the foundation for the Afrofuturism movement. This unique concert will feature a tribute from one pioneer to another\, as Maestro Allen leads the ensemble in a career-spanning performance of Trane’s compositions\, expanded beyond the stars as only the Arkestra can.

She serves as artistic director of the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice\, as well for the Next Jazz Legacy apprenticeship program. For COLTRANE 100\, Carrington will lead a performance of the spiritual-questing suite that has become revered as John Coltrane’s most iconic work\, A Love Supreme. \nSharing the bill will be the multi-instrumentalist\, composer\, performer and curator L’Rain\, whose sonic explorations interrogate how multiplicities of emotion and experience intersect with identity. Her latest record\, fata morgana\, is a genre-defiant synthesis of dancehall\, tape meditations\, slow jams\, gospel\, and crunched metal influences\, and has received near-universal critical acclaim.

The exhibit highlights his spiritual journey\, remarkable artistry\, and revolutionary career. \nOne of the most gifted jazz musicians of his generation\, Coltrane offered listeners an inspired form of playing and composing with few equals. His beautifully controlled ballads and avant-garde material created expressions of beauty\, emotion\, harmony\, dissonance\, and transcendence that had never been heard before. With profound depth\, his music remains emotionally charged and deeply satisfying. John Coltrane’s life was a testament to the pursuit of artistic excellence and an enduring legacy of spiritual jazz. \n

SUMMARY:Irreversible Entanglements presents Ascension // Odean Pope-Reggie Workman-Andrew Cyrille Trio presented by Ars Nova Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Please join Ars Nova Workshop in celebrating the life and legacy of John Coltrane on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth\, with Irreversible Entanglements performing Ascension and the legendary trio of Odean Pope\, Reggie Workman and Andrew Cyrille\, at the Mandell Theater on Friday\, September 25\, 2026. Developed in collaboration with the John and Alice Coltrane estate\, artists\, scholars\, community leaders\, and cultural partners across the city\, the initiative will unfold across venues\, libraries\, public spaces\, and neighborhoods throughout Philadelphia. \nThis generation-spanning double bill features Irreversible Entanglements\, a free-jazz quintet with an experimental punk mentality\, consisting of poet/vocalist Camae Ayewa (often known as Moor Mother)\, bassist Luke Stewart\, trumpeter Aquiles Navarro\, saxophonist Keir Neuringer\, and drummer Tcheser Holmes. Along with several special guests\, they’ll interpret the music of Coltrane’s landmark 1966 album Ascension. The bill also includes a trio of giants\, all of whom have carried the legendary saxophonist’s innovations forward into the 21st century: saxophonist Odean Pope\, a friend of Trane’s who honed his own skills at informal sessions at the Strawberry Mansion home; bassist Reggie Workman\, a member of the John Coltrane Quartet in the early 1960s\, appearing on albums like Africa Brass and Live at the Village Vanguard; and drummer Andrew Cyrille\, whose storied career includes work with Cecil Taylor and Trio 3 with Workman and Oliver Lake.

SUMMARY:John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme: The Man\, The Music and His Timeless Message with Ashley Kahn
DESCRIPTION:Too often\, John Coltrane’s towering legend and enduring influence overshadows his message\, which he meticulously wove into his best known album — which some have called his musical self-portrait — A Love Supreme. Celebrating the 60th anniversary of this seminal recording\, this presentation employs music and video excerpts to better understand the connection between Coltrane’s music and universal message. How did he work spiritual focus into his music? What role did Coltrane envision for himself and his recordings? What was his core message\, and how does it continue to influence musicians and attract an audience well beyond the jazz circle\, to this day?
