SUMMARY:CD Release for the #1 chart topping 'Jawanza Kobie Jazz Composer' released earlier 2021
DESCRIPTION:CD Release for the #1 chart topping ‘Jawanza Kobie Jazz Composer’ released earlier 2021 \nJawanza Kobie would simply like to be known as a composer in the truest sense of the word. Ever since he was young boy he idolized the music of Beethoven\, George Gershwin\, Aaron Copeland and began learning to notate his compositions at nine years of age. Born and raised in West Philadelphia\, he started taking piano lessons in his neighborhood at age six after his mother discovered that he could replicate on his own what his older brother had been taught in his piano lessons right after his brother had finished practicing.

SUMMARY:Adult Education Series: History of Philadelphia Soul
DESCRIPTION:This three-session virtual course taught by Kit O’Toole\, traces the history of Philadelphia or “Philly” Soul. Class Schedule: Thursdays – Sept. 9\, Sept. 16 and Sept. 23 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM \nThis three-session virtual course taught by Kit O’Toole\, traces the history of Philadelphia or “Philly” Soul\, which greatly impacted not only the sound of 70s soul but the development of disco. Its lush string arrangements\, horns\, seductive vocals\, and varied lyrical content added an element of sophistication to funk and soul\, paving the way for disco and the 1990s neo-soul movement. \nThe class will begin with influences such as Phil Spector’s “wall of sound” production\, Motown’s pop/soul gloss\, and James Brown’s “on the one” funk. Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff\, the chief architects of the Philly Soul sound\, will be explored in depth\, as their compositions and productions resulted in classics by the O’Jays\, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes\, and Billy Paul. The duo would also form the Philadelphia International label\, whose legendary house band MFSB helped craft the sound. Along the way\, the sound helped create disco and influenced acts as diverse as David Bowie\, Hall and Oates\, and Jill Scott. In addition to multimedia presentations\, group discussions will further enhance understanding of this greatly influential genre. \nZoom Link will be provided upon registration.

SUMMARY:Kimmel Campus Presents Dianne Reeves
DESCRIPTION:Five-time Grammy winner DIANNE REEVES is the pre-eminent jazz vocalist in the world. As a result of her breathtaking virtuosity\, improvisational prowess\, and unique jazz and R&B stylings\, Reeves received the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance for three consecutive recordings – a Grammy first in any vocal category. \nFeatured in George Clooney’s six-time Academy Award nominated “Good Night\, and Good Luck\,” Reeves won the Best Jazz Vocal Grammy for the film’s soundtrack. \nReeves has recorded and performed with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. She has also recorded with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Daniel Barenboim and was a featured soloist with Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic. Reeves was the first Creative Chair for Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the first singer to ever perform at the famed Walt Disney Concert Hall. \nReeves worked with legendary producer Arif Mardin (Norah Jones\, Aretha Franklin) on the Grammy winning A Little Moonlight\, an intimate collection of standards featuring her touring trio. When Reeves’ holiday collection Christmas Time is Here was released\, Ben Ratliff of The New York Times raved\, “Ms. Reeves\, a jazz singer of frequently astonishing skill\, takes the assignment seriously; this is one of the best jazz Christmas CD’s I’ve heard.” \nIn recent years Reeves has toured the world in a variety of contexts including “Sing the Truth\,” a musical celebration of Nina Simone which also featured Liz Wright and Angelique Kidjo. She performed at the White House on multiple occasions including President Obama’s State Dinner for the President of China as well as the Governors’ Ball. \nReeves’ most recent release\, Beautiful Life\, features Gregory Porter\, Robert Glasper\, Lalah Hathaway and Esperanza Spalding. Produced by Terri Lyne Carrington\, Beautiful Life won the 2015 Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. Reeves is the recipient of honorary doctorates from the Berklee College of Music and the Juilliard School.  In 2018 the National Endowment for the Arts designated Reeves a Jazz Master – the highest honor the United States bestows on jazz artists.
