SUMMARY:Jazz Jam at World Cafe Live
DESCRIPTION:World Cafe Live’s long-running Jazz Jam is for musicians and listeners alike. Our house band will start the evening with a few tunes before they invite a rotating lineup of players to the stage. Instrumentals and vocalists are welcome to sign up and sit in throughout the evening. \nThe Phantasma Trio will be filling in as house band for the July 14th Jazz Jam.\nPhantasma Trio features the lush\, glimmering compositions of bassist and leader Chris Coyle\, the layered drums and electronics of Doug Hirlinger\, and brilliantly mysterious piano work from Ron Stabinsky. This music (at times avant-jazz\, chamber\, and cinematic) has hints of darkness\, of humor\, and of mystery. It has the feeling of drifting emotions\, of phasing in and out of musical styles and approaches\, and of being beautifully out of place. Look out for the debut recording “Phantasma Trio Vol. 1” on Passerine Records.

DESCRIPTION:The Levin Bros w/ special guest\, jazz flutist Ali Ryerson\n(Rooftop Series)\nDoors: June 23\, 2022 6:00 PM\nShow: June 23\, 2022 7:00 PM \n“We grew up in Brookline\, Massachusetts\, a suburb of Boston\, where we were trained in Classical music from a young age. But we also loved the 1950’s recordings by jazz bassist Oscar Pettiford and jazz French horn player Julius Watkins; and those have remained influential\, even as we went on to other playing. The catchy melodies\, deep grooves\, and tight solos made that music memorable\, and it’s been percolating for years for us to do an album of our own in that style”

SUMMARY:Jazz on Jackson
DESCRIPTION:Jazz originated in the Black communities of New Orleans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, with its roots in blues and ragtime. This truly “American” art form is an integral part of our history. Through improvisation\, syncopated rhythms\, an extended harmonic language\, and distinct use of instrumental sounds\, jazz creates a musical world that evokes deep passion\, emotion\, and excitement. \nIn recent years\, jazz has been overlooked in the drag/burlesque world. So\, we decided to curate a show paying homage to this incredible and varied art form. Join co-hosts Balena Canto and Esme Eventide along with two very special guests for this queer artist tribute\, Jazz on Jackson! \nThis months guests are the incredible:\nMo Betta &\nQuinton Lewis \nTicket links are LIVE! Space at The Painted Mug Cafe is limited\, so reserve your seat now! We cannot wait to jam with you and share some amazing performances/music!

SUMMARY:Exploring the Philly Jazz Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Philly has long been a jazz hub\, with cool cats like John Coltrane\, Lee Morgan\, Jimmy Smith\, and Benny Golson calling the city home. Such figures were mainstays in the clubs and concert halls that made up an integral part of the mid-20th century urban landscape. This tour will highlight key locations and stories from Philly’s heyday as a jazz mecca in the 1950s and 1960s up until the present. We’ll begin near the site of the famed Earle Theatre at 11th and Market Streets. From there\, we’ll head down South Broad Street\, a major club thoroughfare. The tour will end at Broad and Fitzwater Streets. Put some pep in your step and come join the fun! \nTour leader Jack McCarthy is a longtime Philadelphia archivist and historian who specializes in Philadelphia music history. Jack has a master’s degree in music history and regularly lectures\, writes\, and gives walking tours on the subject. He has directed several Philadelphia music history projects\, including major projects for the Philadelphia Orchestra\, Historical Society of Pennsylvania\, and Mann Music Center\, and directed the 2018-2019 project Documenting & Exploring the Philly Jazz Legacy\, funded by the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. SUMMARY:Sun Ra Arkestra – Jazz Cultural Voices Concert Series
DESCRIPTION:The Sun Ra Arkestra\, under the longtime leadership of founding saxophonist Marshall Allen\, is as vital and cheekily unpredictable as ever. Blending jazz and blues with electronic and extraterrestrial influences\, these true pioneers of Afrofuturism carry on the inimitable vision and spirit of their enigmatic founder—composer\, pianist\, bandleader\, poet\, and cosmic philosopher Sun Ra.  \nNominated for a Grammy for the very first time in the band’s history for their album ‘Swirling’ on Strut in the Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album category. Recorded in Spring 2019 pre-pandemic and released in October 2020\, the album was recorded at Rittenhouse Soundworks in Philadelphia and was the Arkestra’s first new studio recording to emerge in over 20 years\, capturing them at the peak of their powers.

SUMMARY:Mysterious Traveler All Stars at Parkway Central Library
DESCRIPTION:The Office of Arts\, Culture and the Creative Economy invites you to celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month in Philadelphia this April with free Neighborhood Jazz Performances. \nThe Mysterious Traveler All Stars are an ensemble of some of the best composers and performers culled from the six year old\, Mysterious Traveler Concert Series\, presented as a collaboration between the Free Library of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Jazz Project. The series \,which presented monthly concerts from September through May\, showcased young and not so young\, Philadelphia Jazz artists. The name of the series emphasized the need for these highly talented artists and the general public to get acquainted\, making these strangers no longer mysterious\, but friends and fans. Most important\, these concerts were free to the general public. You didn’t have to be a hipster or a Jazz expert to attend. You just had to show up and enjoy yourself. \nThis event is presented as part of Philly Celebrates Jazz in partnership with Philadelphia Jazz Project.
