SUMMARY:Bobby Zankel's Wonderful Sound 6: Remembering Coltrane
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, July 18\, Bobby Zankel convenes an extraordinary all-star ensemble to remember John Coltrane—one day after the anniversary of Coltrane’s passing and during the centennial year of his birth. \nThis will not be a note-for-note recreation or a museum-piece tribute. It is an evening devoted to Coltrane’s searching spirit: music rooted in freedom\, intensity\, spiritual depth and fearless exploration\, interpreted by six remarkable artists with powerful voices of their own. \nAn evening with The Wonderful Sound is an adventure—a deeply spiritual journey in which the music remains alive\, unpredictable and open to discovery. One of Philadelphia’s essential creative jazz figures\, Zankel has drawn lifelong inspiration from Coltrane’s example\, not only as an improviser and composer\, but as an artist continually reaching for something deeper through sound. \nThis special ensemble brings together three formidable saxophone voices—Bobby Zankel\, Jaleel Shaw and Bryan Rogers—supported by the exceptional rhythm section of pianist Sumi Tonooka\, the ubiquitous and veratile bassist Sam Harris and drummer Nazir Ebo. \nThe concert also marks a rare Philadelphia appearance by Philadelphia native Jaleel Shaw\, one of the leading saxophonists of his generation\, performing for the first time at Black Squirrel Club. \nWith this concentration of talent gathered on one stage\, the evening promises to move beyond commemoration into something immediate and transformative: reverent but adventurous\, deeply rooted yet constantly reaching forward.\nRemembering John Coltrane through the music\, the spirit and the continuing search.

SUMMARY:Fitler Club presents Coltrane at 100: A Guided Listening Experience
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Coltrane at 100 with an intimate guided listening experience exploring the music and legacy of John & Alice Coltrane. \n\n\n\n\nColtrane at 100: A Guided Listening Experience with Anyabwile Love & Marcus Moore\nAs Philadelphia commemorates John Coltrane’s centennial\, this special guided listening — led by Philadelphia native Anyabwile Love\, founder of the John Coltrane Symposium\, and acclaimed author\, curator and music journalist Marcus J. Moore — offers an intimate journey through the music of John and Alice Coltrane. Rather than treating their work as static artifacts of jazz history\, Love and Moore will listen closely to songs from the Coltranes’ catalog\, tracing the spiritual\, philosophical and sonic ideas that connected two of the 20th century’s most important artists. Through selected recordings\, conversation and reflection\, the program will explore how John and Alice used music as a vehicle for transcendence\, inquiry and liberation. \nTogether\, Love and Moore bring complementary perspectives to the experience. Love\, a writer\, filmmaker and professor of History and Black Studies at Community College of Philadelphia\, has spent years examining Coltrane’s legacy through the John Coltrane Symposium and his scholarship on Black culture. Moore\, whose work spans The New York Times\, NPR\, The Washington Post\, The Atlantic and beyond\, has built a career around intentional listening and creating spaces where music can be encountered with patience\, context and feeling. This listening event will invite audiences to hear the Coltranes’ music deeply\, while considering how their work continues to speak to the present.
