PROOF OF VACCINATION IS REQUIRED. \nThe Mini Q’s have been a staple on the Philadelphia jazz scene since keyboardist Luke Carlos O’Reilly and guitarist Ben O’Neill joined forces to create the hard-hitting organ trio in 2004. \nPulling from a wide range of influences\, The Qs meld the rich and flavorful jazz tradition of Jimmy Smith\, Don Patterson\, Pat Martino and Grant Green with the hip hop and soul sensibilities of J Dilla\, Jill Scott\, TSOP and an ever-expanding repertoire of spirituals and hymns. \nFor three and a half years\, The Mini Qs ran a legendary Monday night jam session that served as a gathering place and proving ground for many of the city’s finest musicians. Their debut record\, Monday Night Jump came out of that celebrated time. Since then\, they have performed at the Kimmel Center\, South Jazz Kitchen\, Django and other venues in and around Philadelphia and New York City. \nGrammy nominated artist\, Ben O’Neill has toured the world as the guitarist for John Legend\, Jill Scott\, Kanye West\, Common\, Tye Tribbett\, and many others. At the age of 12 she began performing throughout New England with her father Dave Brinnel. Now in her 20’s\, Brinnel has performed at prestigious venues around the world\, having played with artists such as Sherrie Maricle and the DIVA Jazz Orchestra\, Ingrid Jensen\, Anat Cohen\, and Pell. As part of the Temple University Jazz Band led by Terell Stafford\, she has played and recorded alongside many of today’s top jazz artists\, including Ken Peplowski\, Jimmy Heath\, Ann Hampton Callaway\, Jon Faddis\, Luis Bonilla\, Wycliffe Gordon\, René Marie and Dick Oatts. In addition\, she shared the stage with Maurice Hines and The DIVA Jazz Orchestra as part of the national tour of the Hines’ off-Broadway production “Tappin’ Thru Life.” Hailey was a finalist in the 2021 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition. \nAs an educator\, Brinnel has worked in a variety of settings spanning early childhood\, elementary general\, secondary instrumental and vocal\, private lessons\, master classes\, as well as collegiate-level education courses. She is currently on faculty at The University of the Arts\, The Kimmel Center\, and works as a guest clinician to bring jazz education to classrooms throughout the city. BE there! \n  \nAbout Olivia:  \nOlivia Hughart is an NYU Junior majoring in Jazz Studies with a minor in public policy and management. She is a saxophonist and woodwind doubler and is also the founder/artistic director of Key of She Jazz (keyofshejazz.org)\, which is an organization that supports and encourages girls to be involved in jazz starting in middle school. In 2019\, as a high school senior\, she organized the first-ever Key of She Jazz conference\, which was attended by 200 students\, educators\, and musicians from the Philadelphia area and beyond. Since then\, she has continued to organize virtual events that have allowed Key of She to reach global audiences despite the COVID-19 pandemic and having to cancel and reimagine live events. \nOlivia has been studying saxophone for twelve years and started her music studies in Philadelphia at Settlement Music School and in the nationally recognized music programs at Lower Merion High School in Ardmore\, Pennsylvania. She has studied with Larry McKenna\, Chris Oatts\, Andrew Neu\, and Tony Miceli in Philadelphia\, as well as with Dave Liebman\, Billy Drewes\, and Alan Ferber in New York City. She currently studies with Dave Pietro\, Patricia Brennan\, and Brad Shepik. \nOlivia is a gigging and recording musician\, playing with NYU’s Tisch New Theater Production of “Legally Blonde” in 2019\, the WIJO “Alone Together” recording of 2020\, Aberdeen the Band\, the NYChillHarmonic\, as well as other bands in New York City\, Philadelphia\, and beyond. She also interns with Jazz Philadelphia\, a jazz community-based organization for Philadelphia\, helping with administrative work. DESCRIPTION:The historic Newtown Theatre in Bucks County will kick off a new concert series called “Friday Night Jazz” on Friday\, Feb. 11 at 8 p.m. The first concert will feature The Hailey Brinnel Quartet from Philadelphia with special guest Tony Glausi\, a widely acclaimed trumpeter\, keyboardist\, vocalist and composer from New York. \nJust 26 years old\, Brinnel has already performed at acclaimed venues such as the XPoNential Music Festival\, The Lake George Jazz Festival\, World Cafe Live\, The Kennedy Center\, The Kimmel Center\, The Washington Women in Jazz Festival\, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center\, and The North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam. She was also a finalist in the 2021 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition.\nHer debut album\, I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles\, peaked at #13 on Amazon’s ‘Jazz New Release’ chart\, and #44 on the website’s Jazz Best-Seller chart. Brinnel’s music is firmly rooted in jazz tradition\, arranged such that the energy is preserved but new life is undoubtedly breathed into them. \nGlausi picked up the trumpet at age 10. Amongst other accolades\, he has won first prize in the jazz division of the 2014 National Trumpet Competition\, first prize in the jazz division of the 2017 ITG International Trumpet Competition\, and first prize in the 2017 Carmine Caruso International Jazz Solo Competition.

PROOF OF VACCINATION IS REQUIRED. \nOne of the most striking qualities of Mike Bond’s superb debut recording\, The Honorable Ones\, is the understated\, sophisticated way in which the 30-year-old pianist-composer subsumes his abundant technique for imperatives of beauty and self-expression. His sophisticated\, restrained\, nuanced jazz aesthetics — grounded in exhaustive study of antecedent master practitioners of his instrument and animated by his devotion to the freedom principle — spring directly from his personal history. \nThe son of a Caucasian physics professor and a first-generation Chinese-American stay-at-home-mom whose parents migrated to the U.S. after the Cultural Revolution\, Bond started playing piano at age 4. Two years later\, he won his first classical piano competition at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall\, launching a long period during which he participated in contests at which he and his peers played repertoire by Beethoven\, Bach\, Mendelssohn\, and Haydn. Burned out by the pressure of performing\, he withdrew from that world at 11. \nHis jazz education began soon thereafter\, as a saxophonist in middle school and high school jazz band near Princeton\, N.J.\, where his parents had moved from Old Bridge\, N.J.\, where he spent his first ten years. “I played saxophone\, clarinet and sang in various ensembles — the orchestra\, the studio jazz band\, wind ensemble\, concert choir and marching band\,” Bond says. “But when I was 14\, my freshman year of high school\, the band director needed a jazz piano player for his ensemble\, and I was struggling with the chord changes.” \nTo rectify the issue\, Bond was sent to study with pianist Jim Ridl (best known for his long association with Pat Martino)\, who lived in a neighboring town. “I was mesmerized by Jim’s playing\,” Bond says. “I wondered how he could just improvise. He introduced me to my first jazz records. Jim gave me the basic tools — the forms\, the basic tools of improvisation\, the building blocks.” \nAfter high school\, Bond matriculated at Rutgers University\, where he studied with Stanley Cowell. “Stanley taught me to embrace music as ‘a mirror of the mind\, and the piano as an extension of myself.” “He helped me see the piano as the whole orchestra and shared with me his innovative methods for approaching counterpoint and harmony” he says. \n“I also would go to New York to study with Mike LeDonne\, because I wanted to actually learn how to play in the be-bop and hard-bop styles. As a sophomore\, I realized I wasn’t swinging and I had to figure out how. Then I realized that I had to check out the history; I couldn’t understand what Herbie Hancock does until I understood what Red Garland and Wynton Kelly were doing. With Mike\, I really studied\, the older cats and the newer cats who embodied the bebop and hard-bop language; those who created it and those who wielded it at the highest level: Bud Powell\, Hank Jones’\, Barry Harris\, Ahmad Jamal\, Kenny Barron and Mulgrew Miller. DESCRIPTION:Women’s Jazz Festival featuring one night with two incredible jazz vocalists Renée Neufville and Laurin Talese\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nIN-PERSON\nThe Schomburg Center’s annual Women’s Jazz Festival (WJF) is celebrating 30 years of centering Black women in the field of jazz. The Women’s Jazz Festival was founded in 1992 by then Harlem resident and jazz vocalist\, Melba Joyce. Year after year\, the festival and its curators have brought together musicians\, dancers and a melding of musical genres to deliver an exciting series of concerts featuring some of the best-known and emerging talent by women in jazz today. The 2022 festival will be held in person on March 7\, 8\, 14 and 21. \nJoin us for an evening with the innovative compositions and vocals of Renée Neufville and Laurin Talese. Laurin and Renée were scheduled to appear at the 2020 Women’s Jazz Festival just before the pandemic and subsequent quarantine closed everything down. We are excited to have them back for a double portion of jazz with Laurin Talese opening the evening and Renée Neufville setting us to flight. \nRenée Neufville\nRenée Neufville\, known as the lead songwriter and co-member of the 90s duo Zhané\, which released hits like “Hey Mr. DJ\,” “Groove Thang\,” “Sending My Love\,” and “Request Line” that were all Top 10 R&B hits. Most recently she was the keyboardist and vocalist in the late Roy Hargrove’s RH Factor. A Cleveland\, Ohio native\, Laurin was classically trained at the Cleveland Institute of Music and later studied classical and jazz voice at the University of the Arts where she received a bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance. Her debut album\, Gorgeous Chaos\, released in 2016\, features a stellar line up of musicians and was met with wide acclaim. SUMMARY:Kimmel Campus Presents Arnetta Johnson
DESCRIPTION:The creator of the “Netta Bop” sound\, Arnetta Johnson introduces both young musical audiences and jazz aficionados to an all-new musical experience. Deemed one of the “20 Artists to Watch” by NPR\, Arnetta Johnson is leaving her stamp on the jazz world and earning her place in the playlists of her colleagues and peers. \nThe bandleader of her group\, Arnetta Johnson and SUNNY (Sounds Uplifting Nobility through Notes and Youth)\, and trumpeter for the indie-pop band AJR\, she strives to stand jazz on its head and inspire others. She has performed with some of music’s biggest artists and graced some of the world’s largest stages\, including performing with Beyonce’ at the Super Bowl. Listed as a featured trumpeter on the 2018 “OTR II Tour”\, and adding her signature sound on The Carters Everything Is Love 2018 Grammy Award-winning album.  Her numerous live performance credits include playing with the likes of Terri Lyme Carrington\, Christian McBride\, Ralph Peterson\, Geri Allen\, and Esperanza Spalding just to name a few. \nA New Jersey native\, Johnson attended the Creative and Performing Arts High School in Camden\, New Jersey and has received national medals from the NAACP ACT-SO competition\, has won over 20 Best Soloist Awards from various high school jazz festivals\, and was recognized as the Best Overall Soloist at the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Fest.
