SUMMARY:Exploring the Philly Jazz Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Philly has long been a jazz hub\, with cool cats like John Coltrane\, Lee Morgan\, Jimmy Smith\, and Benny Golson calling the city home. Such figures were mainstays in the clubs and concert halls that made up an integral part of the mid-20th century urban landscape. This tour will highlight key locations and stories from Philly’s heyday as a jazz mecca in the 1950s and 1960s up until the present. We’ll begin near the site of the famed Earle Theatre at 11th and Market Streets. From there\, we’ll head down South Broad Street\, a major club thoroughfare. The tour will end at Broad and Fitzwater Streets. Put some pep in your step and come join the fun! \nTour leader Jack McCarthy is a longtime Philadelphia archivist and historian who specializes in Philadelphia music history. Jack has a master’s degree in music history and regularly lectures\, writes\, and gives walking tours on the subject. He has directed several Philadelphia music history projects\, including major projects for the Philadelphia Orchestra\, Historical Society of Pennsylvania\, and Mann Music Center\, and directed the 2018-2019 project Documenting & Exploring the Philly Jazz Legacy\, funded by the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. Jack writes on Philadelphia music history for the Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia and the online magazine Hidden City Philadelphia. \n**Masks are mandatory on all Hidden City Tours*** \nIf you are a Hidden City Member\, don’t forget to use your promo code for a member discount! \nQuestions\, concerns\, conundrums? Contact Hidden City project coordinator Celia Jailer at cjailer@hiddencityphila.org.

SUMMARY:Josh Lee and The Extended Family with Nick Cruickshank and Philly Lindy Throwdown
DESCRIPTION:Nightlife meets….something new! It’s a free concert and a party – all powered by the brightest talent the region has to offer. From bebop to hip-hop\, neo-soul to salsa\, the music doesn’t stop! An eclectic series of performance events in partnership with Jazz Philadelphia\, REC Philly\, and MALPICA & AFROTAINO. \nPartnered experience with Jazz Philadelphia \nFeaturing Josh Lee and The Extended Family and Philly Lindy Throwdown\, Led by Nick Cruickshank \nSaxophonist\, bandleader\, and Managing and Co-Artistic Director of Jazz Lives Philadelphia\, Joshua Lee is fully dedicated to the advancement of the Philadelphia jazz community. Joshua graduated from Temple University in 2016 and 2019 with both a Bachelors’s and Master’s degree in Jazz Performance. He has had the fortune of mentorship from musicians like Dick Oatts\, Terell Stafford\, Tim Warfield\, and Gary Smulyan on both the Philadelphia and New York scenes. \nAs a result\, Joshua joined the Legendary Count Basie Orchestra in June of 2018 and performs with them around the world while also serving as a regular substitute with groups like the Vanguard Jazz orchestra\, Delfeayo Marsalis’ Upton Jazz Orchestra\, and Terell Stafford’s Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia. Joshua joined the Jazz Faculty at Temple University in the fall of 2019\, was awarded as one of Temple University’s 30 Under 30 in 2020\, and joined the WRTI team in early 2021. \nIn jazz and jazz dance\, innovation is the tradition. Lindy Hop\, jazz dance\, and jazz music have been around for over a hundred years\, but the goal has never been to recreate the past\, rather\, it is to let the influences of the past combined with the vernacular of the present guide each step and shape. The dancers of Philly Lindy Throwdown aim to embody this feeling in their fast swingouts\, their high-flying air steps\, and their playful improvography\, all done in tandem with and in response to live jazz music. Swing may sometimes feel like a journey through time\, but the destination is always today.

SUMMARY:Jazz Jam at World Cafe Live
DESCRIPTION:World Cafe Live’s long-running Jazz Jam is for musicians and listeners alike. Our house band will start the evening with a few tunes before they invite a rotating lineup of players to the stage. Instrumentals and vocalists are welcome to sign up and sit in throughout the evening. \nThe Phantasma Trio will be filling in as house band for the July 14th Jazz Jam.\nPhantasma Trio features the lush\, glimmering compositions of bassist and leader Chris Coyle\, the layered drums and electronics of Doug Hirlinger\, and brilliantly mysterious piano work from Ron Stabinsky. This music (at times avant-jazz\, chamber\, and cinematic) has hints of darkness\, of humor\, and of mystery. It has the feeling of drifting emotions\, of phasing in and out of musical styles and approaches\, and of being beautifully out of place. Look out for the debut recording “Phantasma Trio Vol. 1” on Passerine Records.
