DESCRIPTION:This evening at the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts\, and in this installment of the “Jazz Cultural Voices” concert series saxophonist Donald Harrison\, joins Kevin Diehl and the Ashe All Stars celebrating these musical traditions and their impact on the current day. \nJoin us in an evening celebrating the musical ties of Jazz\, Afro Cuban Rumba and Lucumi Song Culture. \nDonald Harrison along with the artists assembled have performed or recorded with some of the iconic names in jazz\, Latin\, and folkloric music.  New Orleans born is a musician and composer who master musicians consider a master of every era of jazz\, soul\, funk\, and a composer of orchestral classical music.  In the HBO drama Treme\, Emmy winning director David Simon created two characters to portray how Harrison innovated new styles of music.  Harrison has appeared as an actor/musician in 9 episodes of Treme\, Oscar- winning director Johnathan Demme’s film Rachel Getting Married\, Spike Lee’s When The Levee’s Broke documentary\, and Marvel’s Luke Cage.    \nHarrison honed his experience playing with Roy Haynes\, Art Blakey\, Eddie Palmieri\, Dr. John\, Lena Horne\, McCoy Tyner\, Dr. Eddie Henderson\, Miles Davis\, Ron Carter\, Billy Cobham\, Chuck Loeb\, Dr. Lonnie Smith\, Digable Planets\, Guru’s Jazzmatazz\, The Headhunters\, The Chicago Symthony Orchestra\, and The Notoriious BIG.    He has performed with over 200 jazz masters and created three influential styles of jazz. \nKEVIN DIEHL’S ASHE ALLSTARS – AFRO CUBAN CULTURAL CONTINGENT \nKevin Diehl is a Philadelphia-based drummer\, percussionist\, and composer.  He came of age on the 1980s New York Loft Jazz scene and jam sessions.  There\, he led bands\, and worded and studied Afro-Cuban drumming with Jerry Gonzalez.  Returning to Philly\, Diehl dedicated himself to the Lucumi cultural drumming. \nGene Golden – Drummer\, percussionist  \nSkip “Brinquito” Burney – Singer\, Drummer\, percussionist  \nDavid Campanioni – Lead Singer\, Drummer\, percussionist  \nJoe Toledo – Singer\, Drummer\, percussionist  \nShakoor Hakeem – Singer\, Drummer\, percussionist  \nAma Schley –  Dancer \nTHE LUCUMI YOUTH CHOIR \nThis new youth choir sings the Afro-Cuban Canon and is based at OMO ORISHA ILE OSHUN TEMPLE\, Philadelphia

SUMMARY:Ruth Naomi Floyd – Jazz Cultural Voices Concert Series
DESCRIPTION:Ruth Naomi Floyd is a vocalist\, composer and educator.  She leads her own multi-faceted ensemble and her discography consist primarily of original compositions.   Served as Director of Jazz Studies at Cairn University\, Langhorne\, Pennsylvania and is an Artist in Residence at Temple University\, Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania. Ruth taught music for twenty years at The City School in Philadelphia. The Frederick Douglass Jazz Works is Ruth’s latest body of compositions for jazz septet\, based on the speeches and writings of the great leading orator\, abolitionist\, writer\, publisher\, and statesman.  This body of work won the Best Vocal Recital Award at the San Francisco Classical Voice Audience Choice Awards for 2020-2021. In 2021\, Intercultural Journeys commissioned Ruth to compose a three-song cycle for voice and cello in honor of the legacy and activism of the great contralto Marian Anderson.  In May 2021\, Ruth in partnership with Intercultural Journeys was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Project Grant for her new body of work\, The Frances Suite\, which explores the life\, advocacy and literary work of Frances Ellen Watkin Harper\, and will feature an all-female ensemble.

SUMMARY:Exploring the Philly Jazz Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Philly has long been a jazz hub\, with cool cats like John Coltrane\, Lee Morgan\, Jimmy Smith\, and Benny Golson calling the city home. Such figures were mainstays in the clubs and concert halls that made up an integral part of the mid-20th century urban landscape. This tour will highlight key locations and stories from Philly’s heyday as a jazz mecca in the 1950s and 1960s up until the present. We’ll begin near the site of the famed Earle Theatre at 11th and Market Streets. From there\, we’ll head down South Broad Street\, a major club thoroughfare. The tour will end at Broad and Fitzwater Streets. Put some pep in your step and come join the fun! \nTour leader Jack McCarthy is a longtime Philadelphia archivist and historian who specializes in Philadelphia music history. Jack has a master’s degree in music history and regularly lectures\, writes\, and gives walking tours on the subject. He has directed several Philadelphia music history projects\, including major projects for the Philadelphia Orchestra\, Historical Society of Pennsylvania\, and Mann Music Center\, and directed the 2018-2019 project Documenting & Exploring the Philly Jazz Legacy\, funded by the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. Recorded in Spring 2019 pre-pandemic and released in October 2020\, the album was recorded at Rittenhouse Soundworks in Philadelphia and was the Arkestra’s first new studio recording to emerge in over 20 years\, capturing them at the peak of their powers.

DESCRIPTION:Trombonist Hailey Brinnel brings her voice and her instrument to Fellowship Hall.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nJazz Bridge President and vocalist\, Rhenda Fearrington proudly hosts “Jazz @ Fellowship Hall” Third Wednesdays Concert Series at Ridge Avenue Methodist Church\, 7811 Ridge Avenue\, Phila.\, PA 19128. \nPlease join us on December 15 as we welcome trombonist/vocalist Hailey Brinnel to Fellowship Hall. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. \nTickets: $20 at the door\, $15 online in advance at Eventbrite. Students admission is $5 with ID and children under 12 years old get in for free! But you must register at Eventbrite. MASKS ARE REQUIRED. PROOF OF VACCINATION IS REQUIRED. \nThis venue has limited seating capacity\, so buy your ticket in advance and early to avoid a sell-out. \nHailey Brinnel is a trombonist\, vocalist\, and educator based in Philadelphia. At the age of 12 she began performing throughout New England with her father Dave Brinnel. Now in her 20’s\, Brinnel has performed at prestigious venues around the world\, having played with artists such as Sherrie Maricle and the DIVA Jazz Orchestra\, Ingrid Jensen\, Anat Cohen\, and Pell. As part of the Temple University Jazz Band led by Terell Stafford\, she has played and recorded alongside many of today’s top jazz artists\, including Ken Peplowski\, Jimmy Heath\, Ann Hampton Callaway\, Jon Faddis\, Luis Bonilla\, Wycliffe Gordon\, René Marie and Dick Oatts. In addition\, she shared the stage with Maurice Hines and The DIVA Jazz Orchestra as part of the national tour of the Hines’ off-Broadway production “Tappin’ Thru Life.” Hailey was a finalist in the 2021 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition. \nAs an educator\, Brinnel has worked in a variety of settings spanning early childhood\, elementary general\, secondary instrumental and vocal\, private lessons\, master classes\, as well as collegiate-level education courses. She is currently on faculty at The University of the Arts\, The Kimmel Center\, and works as a guest clinician to bring jazz education to classrooms throughout the city. Two performances only\, Monday\, November 29th at 7:00pm and again at 8:30pm\, at the Our House Culture Center located at 6389 Germantown Avenue. \nBILLY STRAYHORN PROJECT is a celebration of the life\, legacy and music of William Thomas “Billy” Strayhorn (November 29\, 1915 – May 31\, 1967)\, the American jazz composer\, pianist\, lyricist\, arranger\, and LGTBQ artist\, best known for his successful three decade collaboration with bandleader and composer Duke Ellington. Ellington called Strayhorn “my right arm\, my left arm … my brain waves in his head\, and his in mine.”BILLY STRAYHORN PROJECT features velvety-voiced-vocalist Tyrone Brown\, Dave Posmontier (keyboard and music direction)\, David Brodie (bass) and Doug Hirlinger (drums)\, playing original arrangements from the Strayhorn songbook such as “Take the ‘A’ Train\,” “Chelsea Bridge” and “Lush Life.” The evening performances coincide with the annual birthday tributes across the country and around the world – www.billystrayhorn.com. \nTwo performances only. His father played piano and drums and his aunt played organ in church. In 1955\, he moved to New York City and began his recording career with Tiny Bradshaw\, before working with Bill Evans\, Bobby Timmons\, Les Jazz Modes\, Kenny Dorham\, Illinois Jacquet\, Freddie Hubbard\, Dizzy Gillespie (1958–59)\, and Thelonious Monk. He is probably best known for his work with Cannonball Adderley\, performing in his quintet from 1955 to 1956 and then again from 1959 to 1964\, and recording extensively for Riverside Records as both a leader and sideman. He later spent several years working with Oscar Peterson (1966-1970) and Cedar Walton (1972-1977). In the 1970s\, Jones recorded several albums as a bandleader for the Xanadu and SteepleChase labels. Jones wrote the jazz standards “Del Sasser” and “Unit 7” while working with Adderley. Other compositions include “Blue Funk”\, “O.P.”\, “Bittersweet”\, and “Seven Minds”. \nHe died of lung cancer in 1981 at the age of 57.
