SUMMARY:Coltrane's Philadelphia presented by the Free Library of Philadelphia
DESCRIPTION:Free Library Exhibitions and The Social Science and History Department\, on the second floor of the Parkway Central Library\, is pleased to present “John Coltrane’s Philadelphia\,” as part of Coltrane 100 Philly. \nThe display focuses on Coltrane’s Philadelphia story. It uses images from books\, records\, and newspaper articles to illustrate his time working at the Campbell’s soup factory\, playing in a youthful big band that practiced in a South Philly living room\, studying music with Danis Sandole and Hasaan Ibn Ali\, and even visiting the Parkway Central library itself to listen to records. The display also highlights many of the Philadelphia-raised musicians who played with Coltrane throughout his career. \nThis free\, all-ages show is up now through Saturday\, November 14.

SUMMARY:Jazz Philadelphia Summit 2026: Offering Edition presented in partnership with the Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection
DESCRIPTION:Sixty years after Coltrane recorded Offering in Mitten Hall\, we return to explore what it means to give and receive across generations. \n\n\n\n\nThe 2026 Jazz Philadelphia Summit takes Offering as an act of giving for its theme\, marking the 60th anniversary of Offering: Live at Temple University (recorded November 11\, 1966) and honoring it within the Coltrane 100 Philly centennial season. As the culminating event of the Coltrane 100 Philly centennial season and the lead event of a two-day celebration\, followed the next evening by a tribute concert featuring Ravi Coltrane at the Temple Performing Arts Center\, the Summit gathers Coltrane’s peers\, including musicians who performed on the original Offering recording\, for first-person reflections on what that night gave to Philadelphia’s jazz tradition. \nBut the Summit doesn’t stop at tribute. A keynote address and panel discussion turn “offering” from a historical act into a present-tense question: what does this community still have to give and receive from each other\, and what will each person in the room commit to offering going forward? Attendees leave not just having honored Coltrane’s legacy\, but having named their own role in carrying it. \nThe Summit will also feature a John Coltrane exhibition curated by the Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection\, drawing on the Collection’s archival holdings to place Offering within the fuller arc of Coltrane’s life and Philadelphia’s jazz history. Alongside the exhibition\, community partners will be on hand for resource-sharing\, connecting attendees with programs\, opportunities\, and support available across Philadelphia’s jazz ecosystem. \nCost: Pay-what-you-wish ($20 recommended donation)
